10-29-07 Halloween Chess Night was a lot of fun.  There were 15 participants in the chess tournament.  About half of the kids dressed in costume.  Nicholas was a soccer player, Kira was a fairy princess, Wesley was a wacky tourist, Kelly was a witch, Jesse was a dinosaur, Luke was a red ninja, David Jr. was a black ninja, Maria was zombie, and Justin was a skeleton.  The winners of the chess tournament: Nicholas Hammond won first place after winning a 5-min blitz tie-break against Justin Tay.  Luke Jia won the top U700 trophy and Roderick Law won the top U400/Unrated trophy.  The winner of the Pirates of the Caribbean chess set raffle was Nicholas Hammond.  It looked like the toughest set to play on was the Lord of the Rings chess set because it was easy to confuse the Knight (Aragorn) with the Rook (Boromir).  The Bishop (Ogre) looked like it should have been a rook due to its size.  Plus there was the temptation to play with the captured pieces while the opponent was pondering his or her next move!
