I’ve played basketball all my life... even more than I’ve played chess and volleyball combined.  In my experience, I’ve seen that although both basketball and chess seem like they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, they are actually very much alike.

Tips

In a King and pawn (on the 7th rank) vs King and Queen endgame, the side with the K and Q has to keep checking until the opposing King goes to the 8th rank behind the pawn.  The King can then get one step closer to helping the Queen out.

Bryan Xiao

 

Bryan Xiao has also emerged as one of Southern California’s top scholastic players.  He got 3rd place in the Grade 1 section of the Western States Single Grade Championships.  I asked his dad, Gang Xiao, some questions to help give us an insight on Bryan’s success.

Diversity: How old is Bryan? 

GX: by September Bryan will be 7.

Diversity: What school does he go to? 

GX: Walnut Elementary School in Newbury Park

Diversity: At what age did he start playing chess?
