In a R&P vs R endgame, the most important thing is to protect your pawn. The key is to keep the enemy King away from your pawn. So first, make sure that your pawn is protected, then cut off the enemy King so it can’t get close to the pawn. |

With his hands and mind busy on the game, begin to talk with him. Discuss matters that are "safe' like the highs and lows of his day or a subject he has interest in. Avoid conflict and use the game time to "break the ice' and regain lost ground. |
