We got a call from a family member last night asking if I can tutor his daughter in Algebra because she couldn’t pass it during the schoolyear and during the summer.  My response, partly joking, and partly serious, was “nah, she has no hope.”  
I was partly joking because of course, she has hope but it will take a lot of hard work, probably everyday for the whole month of August.  But sure, I can get her there.  More...

Tips

In a R&P vs R endgame, the most important thing is to protect your  pawn.  The key is to keep the enemy King away from your pawn.  So first, make sure that your pawn is protected, then cut off the enemy King so it can’t get close to the pawn.

When your teenage boy seems difficult to converse with, try pulling out a game that you and he can share. With his hands and mind busy on the game, begin to talk with him. Discuss matters that are "safe' like the highs and lows of his day or a subject he has interest in. Avoid conflict and use the game time to "break the ice' and regain lost ground.
