Tips

As Winter rolls along, I notice that a lot of the chess kids are involved in basketball. Since, I myself have diverted over and am currently JV Head Coach in Basketball at Holy Family High School, it may be a good time to point out a few parallels between chess and basketball.

  • In basketball, always see the floor. In chess, always see the whole board
  • In basketball, always look before you pass. In chess, always look before you move
  • In basketball, the amount of practice time you spend correlates to your success. Likewise, in chess.

What Defines Good Sportsmanship
A few weeks ago, the girls’ basketball team at Covenant High School in Dallas defeated Dallas Academy by a score of 100-0. There has been debate on whether the winning team should have let up as a gesture of good sportsmanship or whether playing their best at all times was the gesture of good sportsmanship.
